After much anticipation, Matthew Bourne and the New Adventures team returned to the North East with their latest production, Swan Lake.
Heading to the Theatre Royal in Newcastle on opening night, I was excited to see how Matthew Bourne would take this classic story and add his own unique twist. Even before taking my seat I could already see the hive of activity as theatre fans flocked into the place, with this special spark of energy which you can only witness first hand when coming to a New Adventures production.
With everyone finally in their seats, and the venue at maximum capacity the lights dimmed and the show began, with the cast ready to draw us into their world. What I love about any New Adventures show is the attention to detail with the set design, and the costumes created to the highest quality. Coupled together with the sensational and beautiful choreography of all the performers, it is such a warming feeling to witness with your own eyes.

I must be careful with giving away spoilers as such because I truly believe that in order to appreciate the true art that Matthew Bourne has created, this is a show which can only be understood and fully embraced by seeing it for yourself.
What I will say however is that I was left utterly captivated by this gripping performance where we had a well known tale which had been given a new lease of life with a combination of humour, love and some heart breaking moments, whilst also creating an almost poetic rawness. Sure you may have seen many other versions of Swan Lake in the past, but what sets this adaptation apart from all the others out there is that you don’t watch, but also resonate with as you embrace every single moment.
A mastermind and testament to Matthew Bourne’s creative mind, this is also a version of Swan Lake which sees themes which are relatable to the times we live in, including exploring ideas of gender-fluidity and bi-sexual love through the safe space of art and theatre.

Having enchanted us all with such a moving narrative, it is no surprise that as the cast took to the stage for one final time they received a standing ovation of praise and cheers from this Newcastle crowd - a symbol of appreciation for the beautiful evening which none of us will ever forget.
To make sure you don’t miss out on a chance to witness this brilliant production yourself Swan Lake will be here at Theatre Royal Newcastle until Saturday 5th April 2025. Tickets available via www.theatreroyal.co.uk
