A Night at Gaucho, Richmond

Nestled along the scenic banks of the Thames, Gaucho Richmond has long been a staple for those seeking a sophisticated meal with a view. Boasting panoramic waterfront vistas and a sleek, dimly lit interior that seamlessly transitions from upscale lunch spot to romantic evening haunt, the ambiance sets a remarkably high bar. On our recent visit, the kitchen met that bar with flying colors, though, surprisingly, it wasn't the signature beef that stole the show.

While Gaucho is traditionally spoken of in the sacred context of Argentine steaks, the true triumphs of the evening belonged to the sea.

To begin the evening, we bypassed the more traditional meat appetisers in favor of the seafood selection, a decision that proved to be the definitive highlight of the night.

The crab on toast was an absolute revelation. Balanced, delicate, and piled generously atop perfectly crisp bread, it managed to be both rich and brilliantly fresh. Equally spectacular was the tuna tartare, which showcased impeccably sourced fish. It was cleanly diced, vibrant, and seasoned with a precise acidity that awakened the palate.

If you find yourself dining here, consider these two dishes entirely non-negotiable. They were, without a doubt, the best things we tasted all evening.

For the main course, we naturally turned our attention to the steak selection. Gaucho’s reputation for beef remains intact: the steak was good, arriving exactly to our requested medium-rare, nicely charred on the outside, and reliably flavorful. It delivered exactly what a premium steakhouse should, even if it didn't quite eclipse the dazzling heights of the starters.

Where the meal faltered slightly, however, was the final act. Hoping to round out the experience with a classic indulgence, we opted for the chocolate brownie served with ice cream. While perfectly pleasant, it ultimately felt a bit uninspired, a standard, run-of-the-mill dessert that lacked the flair and precision of the preceding courses. It was by no means a bad dish, but it felt ordinary in a setting that aims for extraordinary.

Despite a slightly sleepy finish on the dessert front, Gaucho Richmond remains a premier dining destination. Backed by attentive, polished service and a terrace view that makes you forget you are just a stone's throw from central London, it is an experience well worth the trip.

Where to find it: Gaucho Richmond, The Towpath, Richmond Riverside, London, TW10 6UJ. Request a riverside table when booking.
