Lewis Capaldi returns to the spotlight with the bold and brave new single, “Survive”.
Casting back to those fields of worthy farm and Glastonbury 2023, an emotional Capaldi stood on the Pyramid Stage as a wave of unity came together as the crowd helped Lewis to finish his set after being overwhelmed with his tourettes. This would lead to Lewis taking an almost two year hiatus from music to focus on his mental health, his battles with tourettes and writing new material.
“Survive” is his first single release since his hiatus and reflects on the past two years away from the limelight. It's a song highly focused on mental health, challenges of self doubt and despair but most importantly, defiance.
The chorus is a real shiner for defiance as it comes in punchy and demanding, reflective of one's determination to fight. Lewis also hits this chorus with his timeless powerful vocals that we all came to be familiar with in chart topping hits, “someone you loved” and “before you go”
As you hit the chorus, it feels like Lewis is not only singing these lyrics to the listeners but also to himself as an inner monologue that he will fight and is determined to not give in. His beautifully emotional lyrics are testament to his overwhelming determination to live his life - “I swear to God I’ll survive, if it kills me to, I’m gonna’ get up and try, if it’s the last thing I’ll do”.
Capaldi doesn't just let the chorus do the talking of his survival. The verses address self doubt and despair, questioning repairing wounds and demanding to be back where he belongs. Lewis leads these verses with a softer, controlled and emotive voicing before he lets his vocal range fully open in the chorus.
“Survive” is a reflection of the last two years out of the music, weathering the storms one couldn't imagine, a powerful song of determination and defiance. You feel that it's a song that's returned purpose back to Lewis.
This song reminds me of a quote from “Disturbed” front man, David Draiman who says in most of his lyricism and public speaking, “Sometimes darkness can show you the light”. As you near the climax of the song, it's as if almost the instruments are painting the picture of light beginning to shine through darkness and you can feel the rawness and power of Capaldi pushing through that darkness with the strength to showing up.
“Survive” is the returning single from Lewis Capaldi. A resilience like no other, it's great to see the Scot return so powerfully where he belongs.
Lewis has also been working with mental health charity, CALM, a charity campaigning against living miserably. A mental health charity united against suicide. To find out more on this charity, visit CALM
