F1 Exhibition Comes To London

Situated on the banks of the River Thames, The ExCel plays host to the British showcase of the F1 Exhibition opening on Friday 23rd August.

“Formula 1, The Exhibition” comes home to London. A country so deep in the history of Formula 1, the exhibition shines a light through 74 years of history.

The biggest show to date, features six galleries of historic memorabilia, a partnership with Silverstone Museum bringing to life unique stories of the British Grand Prix and seven iconic Formula 1 cars from Ayrton Senna's iconic Mclaren MP4/4, Sir Lewis Hamilton's record breaking silver arrows, the  2018 championship winning Mercedes AMG F1 W09 to Max Verstappen's F1 Drivers World Championship winning Red Bull RB16b.

State of the art simulators are also present in a European first where fans can get the chance to set the fastest lap time at Silverstone.

As you enter the exhibition, you have the chance to grab a headset and have an audio guided tour round the exhibition, providing an immersive experience interacting with the films on display throughout and hearing the history and stories in your ears as you wander around the exhibits.

Damon Hill, former British racing driver and 1996 Formula 1 World Champion was in attendance on Tuesday and shared his thoughts on the exhibition:

“It’s been an incredible honour to be involved in The F1 Exhibition. F1 has always been a key part of Britain’s sporting heritage, so it is only right for London to be the next host city for the exhibition. This special show connects fans both old and new with the exciting world of F1. I cannot wait for visitors to take a journey through the history of F1 and learn more about the sport that is loved by millions around the world. It really is a must see!”

Fans have the opportunity to see Damon Hill's racing suit and helmet from his championship winning year amongst the “magnificent 7” display of world championship winning Williams drivers in the Drivers and Duels room.

The six uniquely designed rooms are:

ONCE UPON A TIME IN F1 - A gallery giving fans a journey through the most defining moments of Formula 1 history and where fans can see the Silverstone Museums contribution

DESIGN LAB - As the title suggests, F1 partner and tyre supplier Pirelli have their tyre strategy on display and is the where fans can find Max Verstappen's RB16b. Interactive screens will allow fans to delve into the vast dynamics of a Formula 1 car's design.

DRIVERS AND DUELS - A colourful room, showcasing 96 driver Helmets. Various suits from throughout history, an interactive Formula 1 steering wheel, hall of fame and where fans can get close to the F1 World Drivers Championship trophy

REVOLUTION BY DESIGN - The room where fans can see Sir Lewis Hamilton's Silver Arrow and the iconic MP4/4 driven by Ayrton Senna. The room focuses on the innovations of design in Formula 1 and the future development of the sport.

SURVIVAL - A partnership with Moneygram Hass F1 team displaying the remaining chassis of Romain Grosjean's car and exclusive interviews with Romain and those involved.

THE PIT WALL - The final room which brings an immersive experience at the end like you're standing on the pit wall. It's a 6 minute, lights and sound immersion of the last 76 years of Formula 1.

Darkus took the time to speak with F1 Exhibitions lead curator, Timothy Harvey, to find out more about the exhibition.

Timothy Harvey explains more about the exhibition:

“I think it's an exhibition that appeals to a much broader audience than just car fans, than just sports fans. A lot of the themes transcend sport, transcend Formula One and the range of different experiences that we include in the show, interactive displays, sculptural installations, obviously cars, film and a rich variety of artifacts really lends itself to the breadth and depth of audiences that exist in the UK. So we hope that it's a show that everyone can come to see.”

The F1 Exhibition opens on Friday 23rd August and tickets for the experience can be purchased here
