Singer-songwriter Emily Burns delivers the refreshingly sweet ‘Give And Take’, marking her second release of 2024.
Following her May 2024 single ‘8 Hours Behind’, ‘Give And Take’ offers a hopeful and romantic perspective on modern love. Without fear of rejection or being seen as over the top, the track proudly presents Burns’ genuine reflections through her lyrical offerings: “what if you’ve already had your last first kiss? What if every moment feels like this? I’ll take it”.
Burns is no stranger to the music industry. In fact, she has actively solidified her place in it for almost 15 years. From competing in 2010’s “Live and Unsigned” to securing numerous record signings, releasing 3 EPs, and performing across various tours and festivals, her refined talent and developed craftsmanship are unmissable in ‘Give And Take’.
The track's first and most distinctive element is Burns’ vocals which fuse an easy-going timbre with an underlying richness, making it so easily engaging and inviting.
‘Give And Take’ predominantly draws on acoustic elements to really enhance that relaxed, carefree summer vibe. Featuring acoustic guitars, swooning synths, graceful harmonies and backing vocals, ‘Give And Take’ will effortlessly suit fans of Maggie Rogers, Gracie Abrams, and Kehlani.
The accompanying music video further heightens the track’s emotive concept. Filmed in New York, it captures a pretty perfect day out as Emily and her girlfriend, Grace, enjoy romantic strolls through the park, explore vintage shops, and admire the city skyline, with lots of sweet moments in between.
The footage itself was captured on both Emily and Grace’s phones with no intention of actually filming a music video. This casual, almost old-school production style adds another layer of authenticity to the song and its sentiment, depicting the most real and ordinary aspects of two people in love. However, upon reflection, Burns later realised that “‘Give And Take’ was the perfect soundtrack for these moments”.
In particular, Burns cites:
“Walking into Times Square for the first time was a real moment - it felt like stepping into a movie scene. So to have our own little ‘short film’ of the trip is really perfect”.
With both the single and video out now, Burns has captured that movie-like feeling of love - that completely head-over-heels type of romance. But rather than highlight the grand gestures and love’s intensities, ‘Give And Take’ focuses on the everyday things that make up the bigger picture, like “pastry, and TV, and sunburnt skin” and “bad jokes, voice notes, and board game wins”.
‘Give And Take’ is yet another feat in Burns’ long and thriving career, and perfectly timed as the August sun finally leads us into summer. With teasers across her Facebook page asking listeners to keep their eyes peeled, is this the start of a bigger project for Emily Burns?
