Divided between Music, Fashion, Performing Arts, Film & TV, Travel and Lifestyle and everything in between, this is our way of paying tribute to some outstanding and hardworking humans!"

MUSIC

North East Artist Of The Year: Finn Forster

Photo Credit: Sam Wall ft Finn Forster (Generator Live, Boilershop Newcastle, 5th October 2024)

Having been introduced to us for just over a year now, Finn Forster from the Teeside has had a very impressive and strong 2024. A year which has seen him continue to shape his craft as a singer-songwriter, pushing himself on every level as achieving a string of milestones in the process such as signing to Interval Records and a busy year playing shows all across the country. Finn is a true inspiration and some one who is living proof of what it means to succeed with the passions who love the most.

One To Watch: KAETO

Photo Credit: Sam Wall ft. KAETO (O2 City Hall Newcastle, October 2024)

This year we had the pleasure of first meeting singer-songwriter KAETO while she was on tour with Last Dinner Party. What I love about KAETO is her natural confidence to take a very honest approach to songwriting. That confidence is brought to life even more when performing live, and from a listener perspective just helps to elevate the experience of connecting to her music even more. KAETO possesses so much potential, that the journey ahead just has so much excitement in store.

Rising Stars In Music Award: Hot Milk

Photo Credit: Sam Wall ft. Hot Milk (Riverside, Newcastle, November 2024)

Hailing from Manchester, duo Han and Jim are a duo who know how to bring the energy and put on one hell of an explosive rock show. Over the past few years we have really loved seeing their growth and their ability to inject a boost of raw energy and adrenaline into their growing and loyal fan base. Their rise through the music scene will only get stronger and stronger each day, making you feel like to avoid missing out, you haven’t lived until you have invited a bit of unadulterated Hot Milk into your life.

UK Band Of The Year: Himalayas

It was back in 2022 when we were first introduced to 4 talented guys from Wales who went by the name of Himalayas and since then it has been an inspiration and joy to see how they have continued to evolve as a band within the UK music scene. In 2024 alone the band have wasted no time in making the most of the year and taking their music to new heights, not only touring across the UK but also supporting the likes of the Foo Fighters.

They have come a really long way, and continue to win over the hearts and minds of music fans especially here in the UK.

Break Through Artist Of 2024: Delilah Bon

If you have not discovered Delilah Bon already, then let me tell you, you are seriously missing out. As an upcoming coming artist she has so much ambition and drive which is evident in her music.

Having headlined the BBC Introducing stage at Leeds Festival this year, as well as bringing out her latest album Evil, Hate Filled Female as well as her sold out UK headline tour this November, Delilah is taking girl power to the next level and creating a vibe we cannot get enough of.

International Band Of The Year: Almost Monday

From all the artists I have interviewed over the years, I always love those open ended conversations where you have the opportunity to really get to know a person and some of those unique qualities that make them who they are. This year, whilst on tour with the Driver Era, we had the pleasure of speaking to San Diego trio, Almost Monday. Being a support band is not something to be taken lightly, but in the case of Almost Monday these guys gave music fans here in the UK an energetic and fun loving set to remember.

Having already announced their own headline tour in 2025, we cannot wait for them to return to the UK.

Independent Artist Of The Year: Fiaa Hamilton

It is crazy to think that it has been just over four years since we have known Essex based singer-songwriter Fiaa Hamilton. Being an independent artist, especially in 2024 is not for the faint hearted, but through constant hard work, determination and Fiaa’s constant positive energy, she has continued to thrive.

Each year has brought its own achievements and milestones for Fiaa, but in terms of this year especially she has pushed herself to be the best she can be. A true kind spirit who is the most refreshing blessing to the music scene here in the UK.

Having released a string of great singles and music videos this year, as well as her latest track Boy Like You, we are so excited about the next chapter of the one and only Fiaa Hamilton.

International Solo Artist Of The Year: Sabrina Carpenter

It still makes me laugh but also smile when I remember that the very first time I met Sabrina was when she was in the UK  for the very first time back in 2017 supporting The Vamps on their UK headline arena tour. Back then I was absolutely addicted to her track Thumbs (which I still listen to on loop on a regular basis still to this day).

Fast forward to 2024 and well unless you have been hiding under a rock, Sabrina has gone on to become a global superstar with her latest record Short N’ Sweet being a testimony to the remarkable testament to her continued flourishing as an artist.

Debut EP Of The Year: Gigi Gold - Souvenirs

Having been a couple of bands over the years, in 2024 the very cool and stylish Gigi Gold decided to take her first steps into pursuing her solo-music career, releasing her debut EP Souvenirs.

Having listened to the EP myself and also had the pleasure of chatting to her too earlier in the year, what I really admired about Gigi is her authenticity and sincerity when it comes to her style as a songwriter. With Souvenirs in particular this EP sees her adding a personal approach as she shares some of her life experiences while resonating with the listener in the process.

Debut Album Of The Year:  Die Happy - Emily Burns

UK singer-songwriter Emily Burns is someone who very much wears her heart on her sleeve especially when it comes to music. This November saw Emily release her debut album, Die Happy, a record which is beautifully written with so much intricacy and depth flowing throughout.

This album is not just a collection of stunning songs but also a reflection into Emily’s mind as a person - someone whose music is comforting and has this powerful ability to make us feel and resonate as listeners.

EP Of The Year: One More Night - Only The Poets

As music fans there are always those choices in our music collection where we cannot help but feel the energy and sing out hearts out at the top of our lungs, and for me one of those choices would be British band Only The Poets. Earlier this year the band brought our a special 8 track EP, titled One More Night.

Ever since that first play, I felt such an instant bond to their music, because Only The Poets have infuse such genuine honesty within their songwriting, where it feels as though they are speaking to the mind of the listener. This EP is a combination of wholesomeness, the ability to make you think and feel and most of the type of music to lift up your spirits and comfort you regardless of what is happening in the world around you. Only The Poets and their EP One More Night will forever have my total admiration.

Album Of The Year: Actually Good - Lambert

The power of music is not always in the lyrics, its also in the way the music itself is performed. As an accomplished composer and pianist, Lambert is one of those artists that I have a whole lot of respect for. In his latest album, Actually Good which was released this August, Lambert continues to bring such beauty and elegance to the way he plays.

Having followed his music and his journey I love who creatively Lambert always continues to keep us on our toes, and with Actually Good in particular is body of work where all our senses are heightened as we find ourselves connecting to the music in a much deeper and captivating way.

Music Venue Of The Year: O2 City Hall Newcastle

Photo Credit: Sam Wall, Venue - O2 City Hall Newcastle, Featured Band - Last Dinner Party (October 2024)

If there is one music venue which myself and the rest of Team DARKUS always love returning to time and time again, it would have to be the O2 City Hall in Newcastle. A place which has very much felt like a second home as week on week over the course of 2024 we have seen a multitude of great live shows ranging from The Last Dinner Party, Driver Era, Declan McKenna, Cian Ducrot and so many more.

What makes the O2 City Hall that extra bit special is the staff on the ground from the box office staff, security teams and all the brilliant people who work behind the scenes to create a venue where everyone is made to feel welcome and feel a sense of community and belonging.

Best UK Headline Tour of The Year: Becky Hill

Photo Credit: Sam Wall - Becky Hill - October 2024 (Utilita Arena Newcastle Upon Tyne)

Every since I was introduced to the music of Becky Hill I have always loved her vibe, because she is one of those UK artists who just continues to raise the bar with every step she takes.

This October, Becky toured the UK as part of her headline arena tour, and I can honestly say one was of the best live music shows from a UK artist I have seen in a long time.

Best International Headline Tour Of The Year: Tour of the Setting Sum - Sum 41

Photo Credit: Sophie Ditchfield - Sum 41 (First Direct Arena Leeds October 2024)

This choice is both a personal and emotional one for me. Back in 2003 when studying abroad in Canada, I went to my first ever rock show - Sum 41. And over the years since I have love following their journey. Fast forward to 2024, following the news that the band would be soon calling it  a day, I was fortunate to attend one of their final shows ever as part of the Tour Of The Setting Sum which came to Leeds First Direct Arena this October.

With it being one final chance to see such an iconic band perform live, Sum 41 really pulled out all the stops to make it a show to remember as they took their fans through the catalog of some of their greatest hits. Throw in a good helping of energy, confetti, balloons, lazers, pyro and fire, Sum 41 gave one of the the greatest rock shows you could ever experience.

Independent Festival Of The Year: Kendal Calling 2024

Photo Credit: Sam Wall (Kendal Calling)

As many of you know, here at DARKUS we love a good festival, and this Summer we made our debut appearance at Kendal Calling. Hand on heart this was honestly one of the best and well run independent festivals we have ever attended, because from the very moment you arrive you step into a place filled with so much positive energy, where music helps to unite people from all walks of life.

Offering a mixture of exceptional live music from well known and emerging artists, comedy, an on site cinema and chill out areas, Kendal Calling has so much to offer. It may have only been our first year going, but already Kendal Calling has won my heart!

Pioneers Of Music Award: Generator

Each day I wake up thankful for having the luxury of living in the North East, especially as when it comes to Music we have such a thriving and special music scene.

Based here in Newcastle, Generator are continually investing in our region, and are leading the way in ensuring that the local musicians are given the tools, support  and the platforms to reach their full potential.

Having run events such as Generator Live, entered into partnerships with the likes of the The Glasshouse in Gateshead and teaming up with the local councils across the North East are bringing such a new and refreshing lease of life in our region, which I am sure I speak on behalf of so many people, when I say its something we are truly thankful for.

Music & Innovation Award: Beyond The Music Conference 2024

Beyond The Music Conference is much more than a Conference, it is a platform and a safe space where those important conversations take place about the future and culture of the UK music scene, especially in the North.

A space where those from all sides of the industry be they artists, labels, managers and music fans can come together to take a deep dive into the lived experiences, and for once have those voices heard and acknowledged.

While this October was my first time attending Beyond The Music Conference, I came away feeling enriched and inspired by the way that Beyond The Music and all those involved bring the power of music and innovation together, not just to create something for the here and now, but also creating a legacy which also benefits future generations.

Multi-faceted Creative Of The Year 2024: Collette Cooper

A playwright, an accomplished musician and an artist to name but a few, London based Collette Cooper is one of the most remarkable and multi-talented people we have the pleasure of knowing. This year alone for example Collette had her artistic and thought provoking pieces showcased at the Purge Art Exhibition in Knightsbridge London, as well as releasing her latest EP Fireball which came out on the 8th November 2024.

There are no limits to Collette’s impeccable talents, and it has been such a blessing to see her continue to embrace all that natural creative flair.

Record Label Of The Year: Marshall Records

A conversation I have time and time again with many artists during our various interviews is some of those all important qualities people look for when deciding to sign to a label. One label in particular which has really caught my attention recently is Marshall Records.

As a label they allow their artist to feel a sense of independence whilst also providing the essential tools to support them thus creating a relationship based on trust, support and equal respect.

Male Live Music Photographer of The Year 2024: Sam Wall

Photo Credit - Sam Wall, Dead Pony (Kendal Calling 2024)

I am so appreciative that I have such a talented team of exceptional photographers who have really become part of the DNA of DARKUS. This year however I have been impressed by one of our photographers in particular and how far they have come since first joining my team in 2019.

Throwing himself into as much live music as possible, Sam Wall has grown with such confidence to become one of the strongest members of my team. As you will have noticed from some of our social media content and gig review coverage Sam has this ability to take a photo where you are able to relive the moment through the power of live music photography.

Female Live Music Photographer of The Year 2024: Livy Dukes

Photo Credit: Livy Dukes - Leeds Festival 2024

It is often thought that when it comes to live music photography it is mainly an male dominated industry, however here at DARKUS we recognise that female photographers are just as awesome if not better when it comes to their male counterparts. As a freelance photographer, as well as a member of my live music photography team here at DARKUS, I have really been impressed at the great potential that Livy has showcased. This year alone, Livy represented DARKUS at BBC Radio 1 Big Weekend and was also part of our core team at Leeds Festival this summer.

What I really love about Livy’s work is the love that she puts into all of her work, and is someone with an abundance of ambition who is always thriving to deliver the very best. The quality of Livy’s work speaks for itself, and it is such a blessing to see the continued rise of one of the most female music photographers I have had the pleasure of knowing and working with.

Music & Photography Creative Of The Year 2024: Sarah Oglesby

Photo Credit: Sarah Oglesby (Leeds Festival 2023)

Based in Leeds, Sarah Oglesby is notably one of the most impressive creatives I have ever come across. It was back in 2022 when I first had the pleasure of meeting Sarah, a very focused and determined lady with lots of ambition and potential, before joining DARKUS as a guest photographer and also a core member of my Leeds Festival team.

Outside of DARKUS, Sarah's talents are limitless as she has taken her passion of photography, videography and music to new levels, and has been involved in a range of phenonemal projects and campaigns with some of the UK's exciting names in music including singer-songwriter Ellur and Stockport band Blossoms. It fills me with happiness seeing her doing so well, slaying day by day. There may so many creatives in this industry, but at the end of the day, she is the one and only Sarah Oglesby.

Creative Platform Of The Year 2024: Sheffield Magazine

There was a time many years ago when DARKUS was very much the new kid on the block - all I had was this passion for writing about things I enjoyed, and as a day dreamer thought, hey why don't I have a go at making a magazine - how hard can it be right? haha!

Having been in that position myself, it makes me really excited to see platforms such as Sheffield Magazine just pushing themselves and making their dreams a reality. The creative brainchild of Sophie Walker with support from Matt Codd, this dynamic duo and their team of writers have created a platform and creative outlet which really celebrates just some of the wonderful things that make the City Of Sheffield that extra bit special - be that the arts scene, the home grown talent, the rich music culture and so much more.

This year in particular, the Sheffield Magazine team excelled even more when they created and produced their first ever full edition of the magazine dedicated to Tramlines Festival. Yes they may be a small team, but the quality of their work speaks volumes and I will forever be inspired by the journey that Sophie and Matt continue to make. Ey Up! This is world domination the Sheffield Magazine way!

TOP MUSIC PR’s Of 2024

Following DARKUS tradition like we have each and every year we have been doing the Honours List, we also wish to pay special tribute to those unsung heroes of the music industry - the PR’s and independent agents.

Choosing just one as a out right winner would be one of the hardest choices to make, because at the end of the day we value each and every PR relationship, with each of the listed names bringing their own special vibe. PR’s play a vital role in bridging that gap between the artists allowing us to  bring such strong content to our audiences.

Black Arts PR

With the wonderful Simon Blackmore at the helm of Black Arts PR, this is a partnership we really appreciate and value here at DARKUS. Representing a wide array of artists, we have had the pleasure of supporting Simon’s roster and have involved a number of them as part of our special DARKUS showcase series over the past number of years.

Chuff Media

We have so much gratitude for the team at Chuff Media, especially with it being a partnership which is 11 years. Thanks to Warren, Jenny and the rest of the Chuff Media team, we have had so many brilliant opportunities over the years, and have been collaborating with us since the very early years of DARKUS when we were still finding our voice and direction as a publication.

Not only has the Chuff Media team introduced us to a wide array of artists across most genres, but they live by the principles of ensuring that they go above and beyond to supporting each and every one of their artists with equality and respect.

Dawbell

While we have worked with Dawbell previously in the early years of DARKUS, it was probably during the Covid pandemic of 2020 where we really re-connected and really worked together to support their talent.

4 years later, and that relationship has only strengthened, and it is good to see a team so passionate about championing the voices and journeys of all of their artists, especially their emerging artists within the music scene.

Dedikated PR

Kat Bawden is probably one of the coolest people we know. As the founder of Dedikated PR, Kat works single handedly on a one-to-one basis with the artists that she represents, going above and beyond to ensure they are receiving the most impactful campaigns possible,

With a strong roster the trust and confidence especially from the emerging artists who work with her, speaks for itself.

Edge Publicity

The Edge Publicity team have always been a joy to work with and this is all thanks to founder Shoshanna and her dedicated team consisting of Ramarna, Evie and Tonicha. Being an independent publication, can sometimes have it challenges but thanks to Edge Publicity, platforms such as ourselves are still are given the opportunity to support the artists they represent.

As our core focus is predominantly on emerging artists, it is great to know that the visions between Edge Publicity and DARKUS align so nicely.

Gala PR

Having heard so many great things about Gala PR through friends within the industry, this year we finally had the opportunity to connect. Led by founder Alex Sutton, Gala PR are an absolute dream to work with, and are one of the most considerate, hardworking and passionate teams we have ever met.

Looking after the press for this year’s Slam Dunk and also Kendal Calling, I was really impressed by the professionalism of Alex and her team, whilst also being warm and welcoming in each and every interaction.

Good As Gold

I have so much appreciation for Hayley, Holly and Matt because we have all been joining forces for exactly 12 years if not longer, when DARKUS freshly in its infancy. Anyone who has known me, will known that other than my love of Disney soundtracks, at the very beginning due to influences from my university days I was a bit into my rock, metal and emo music, and well that reflected alot in a lot of the earlier DARKUS content. I am forever grateful to the Good As Gold team for the opportunities they provided us with back in 2012 and am even more grateful how they have continued to provide those opportunities 12 years later.

This year alone we have had the honour of supporting a number of their international artists, teamed up on some pretty ace showcase projects. However what I love most about Good As Gold is their level of support and the quality service they provide every single one of their artists. They may be a small team, but they are a team who mean business and know how to get things done, creating an impact and slaying day after day.

MBCPR

Again MBCPR are another team who will always have our loyalty and love. Having collaborated for a good few years, it has been really enjoyable to be part of a relationship which continues to moving in a positive and trusting direction.

Ant, Ashley and Chloe are like the mighty trio of the PR world, because they not only bring structure to MBCPR but also go above and beyond to ensure their artists are being championed.

Halestorm PR

The relationship between Halestorm PR and DARKUS is almost approaching 10 years (mind blowing I know), and I have to say this is one of the nicest teams i have had the pleasure of working closely with.

Founded by Lauren with the support of Michelle, Steph and the rest of their team, Halestorm has become one of the most well respected PR’s around and that is a credit to to supportive and personable approach they provide all of their artists. What I love as well is that they have a wide array of clients from the big names, the breakthrough artists as well the up and coming stars of tomorrow, and it is thanks to the Halestorm team I have discovered some of awesome talent.

Plugged In

It is always exciting when teams venture into new areas. Having predominantly been focused on radio promotion for over 10 years, this year saw Plugged In open up their press division, calling upon the assistance of Alice Mortimer to help lead the way. In the short space of time the press team at Plugged In has already seen incredible results with all the emerging national and international artists she represents.

As I said time and time again we love our new talent here at DARKUS so when you have Plugged In telling us about some of their emerging artists, for us it is like a joining of forces that works perfectly.

Sonic PR

As one of the regional PRs we have been working with for a substantial amount of time, what makes Sonic PR that extra bit special is the team themselves. Rob and Thom have such a strong hunger for music, and I love the fact that as far as their roster is concerned it has an abundance of diversity to it especially when it comes to genres and a good mix of well known and emerging names.

What I really value about Sonic PR is their good, honest qualities, and how they will always endeavor to be as accommodating as possible.

The Noise Cartel

In the very early years we had a bit of involvement with The Noise Cartel, but thankfully this year the stars were aligned and we finally had another opportunity to collaborate with The Noise Cartel team. With metal and rock very much being woven into the heritage of DARKUS, this year we have loved working with Jazmin and The Noise Cartel on a number of projects.

We live in times when there is so much talent in the world, so it can be overwhelming knowing where to begin, but that is why it is a blessing to know that teams such as The Noise Cartel exist because they are working hard to get ahead of the curve to celebrate the artists who are keeping the rock and metal scene alive.

Wilful Publicity

Similar to Good As Gold, Chuff Media and Sonic PR, Wilful Publicity were also one of the very first teams we collaborated with in the early stages of our own journey. Over time that relationship has strengthened and it is such a blessing to work with Will and David to give their artists coverage wherever possible,

The guys at Wilful have such approachable personalities and ensure that they are investing in the longevity of the artists they invest in.

WMA

While they may have offices across the globe, it is thanks to Shane who is leading  the UK branch, that we are able to connect to the world of WMA. Shane and the rest of his team have so much positive energy and I really love that they are champions for fresh and new music across all genres.

This is very much a new, relatively new collaboration for us, but already we cannot wait to enter in even more great collaborations in the months to come.

Fashion, Hair & Beauty :

Fashion Creative of The Year: Jack Irving

London based designer Jack Irving is much more than a designer, he is someone with an active and rich creative mind who brings together fashion and art, pushing the boundaries to create stunning pieces. Each of the seasons he has showcased his latest creations at London Fashion Week they always continue to be a source of conversation for many within the fashion industry, and this February when I went to see his presentation I was really stunned at his natural ability to elevate his thoughts and his vision.

I really admire and respect Jack because he is someone who takes a step away from what is considered the norm, and just allows his own creativity to lead the way. Its for this reason that Jack Irving deserves my selection as Fashion Creative of the Year.

Pioneers of Fashion Award: Jimmy Choo Academy

Think about this for a moment, have you every put yourselves in the shoes of an emerging designer finding yourself and direction in an industry which said to be so competitive?

Well thanks to places such as the Jimmy Choo Academy they are leading the way in investing and nurturing the lives of so many students that come through their doors. Not just providing education and resources but also empowering and shaping the future designers of tomorrow.

Visionaries of Fashion: Vin + Omi

I remember when I was still very new to the fashion scene, that one of the first shows I went to was a Vin + Omi catwalk, and since then it has been so rewarding and inspiring to follow their journey. At this September’s fashion week in London, in celebration of their remarkable career I was invited to their catwalk event, a good opportunity myself and others to really witness the evolution of the creative minds of both Vin and Omi.

With their values built on sustainability and the preservation of our planet, what I really like about Vin + Omi is that they have always stayed true to their roots and take the concept of fashion and transform them into statement pieces.

I have an unconditional amount of respect for Vin + Omi, because it is their personalities and their authenticity which sets them apart.

Fashion Platform Of The Year: On|Off

Founded by Lee Lapthorne, On|Off has become such a powerful platform for those emerging designers looking to make their impact in the world.

Lee and his team give designers the confidence to reach their full potential whilst also creating the means and opportunities for them to be involved in things such as London Fashion Week. It is thanks to On|Off that I have been able to discover names such as Jack Irving.

Independent Fashion Designer Of The Year: IMI Studios

Now my first introduction to IMI Studios back in 2021 is always something that will make me smile. As part of a photoshoot, our junior stylist at the time sought some items from IMI Studios to use as part of our shoot with the musician GIRLI. Since then I have been following the journey of this emerging and independent fashion brand which is led single handley by Imogen Evans founder of IMI Studios.

As a very ambitious, resourceful person Imogen has this inspirational level of passionate and belief in her brand, where fast forward to this day IMI Studios has evolved into this name which is much sought by countless people, including celebrity clientele from around the world.

TOP Fashion PRs Of 2024

Again similar to what I mentioned about Music PRs, it is thanks to the likes of Trace Publicity, In Addition and independent PR Sarah Morton why we are able to discover such incredible opportunities here at DARKUS.

TRACE

Trace Publicity have such a hard working and passionate team who go above and beyond to ensure the events of their clients go smoothly.

In+Addition

In + Addition I just love the fact that every single member of their team have a shared vision of supporting up and coming talent, and ensure they add that personal touch to ensure that the voices of the talent they represent are celebrated and heard.

Sarah Morton

Sarah Morton, being an independent PR especially in the fashion industry is not for the faint hearted, but I always have admired Sarah’s professional and welcoming attitude, and is a PR consultant who really does believe in the clients that she represents.

Outstanding Contribution To Fashion: Paul Costelleo

Ft. EIC Thushara Chandrasiri with Paul Costelleo

I have lost track of just how many of Paul’s events I have attended over the years, but what I do know is that I will forever hold him in high regard as one of the most remarkable leading men in the world of fashion I have ever met.

His collections are more than just impressive and stunning, they have a lot of thought and depth to them, and I love that regardless of how big the Paul Costelleo name has become over the years, Paul’s heart and spirit still remains at the very core in all that he does.

Having met Paul on a number of occasions and had many the reflective chat, he is one of the kindest and talented minds I have ever met.

Hair Stylist Of The Year 2024: Brendan O’Sullivan

Credits: Hair - Brendan O’Sullivan, Photography - Anna Pluskota, Styling - Manny Lago, Assistant Stylist - Jennie Quirke, Beauty - Shamirah Sairally, Model - Zoe Reed (MA Runway London)

As a creative, Brendan O’Sullivan has continue to thrive as one of the leading hair stylists whether that be involved in photo shoots, working behind the scenes at London Fashion Week or adding a bit of confidence to his many customers that visit his salon in Amersham.

Having kept up to date with his work through social media, and also on occasion had the pleasure of having him be involved with DARKUS projects in the past, Brendan has always been someone I have looked up to.

There used to be a time where when it came to a catwalk or a photoshoot, everyone would focus on either the model or the photographer, but for us here at DARKUS its hairstylists such as Brendan O’Sullivan who also play an equally important role.

Performing Arts:

Live Arts Performance Of The Year: Edward ScissorHands

I have been to so many shows this year, that is hard to pick out just one favourite, but if there is one show that really stood out as one of the most memorable it would be Matthew Bourne’s adaptation of Edward Scissorhands. For many people from my generation especially, this was a film many of us grew up watching, so to see how this adaptation would be brought to life on the stage was something I couldn’t wait to see.

Taking on the leading role of Edward, actor and performer Liam Mower gave such a powerful and gripping performance, honoring Tim Burton classic’s character originally played by Johnny Depp, and also adding a new freshness and beauty to the role.

Leaders In Live Arts Award: Opera North

Production: Magic Flute by Opera North

There was a time when when you thought of a night at the opera this idea that is was for the wealthy and the upper class, but thanks to Leeds based Opera North they are helping to change the narrative and making Opera accessible to all.

When ever the Opera North seasons tour to Newcastle twice a year, they are always the shows I clear out my calender so nothing gets in the way of giving them my full priority. Thanks to Opera North I have a new appreciation for the Opera, and really enjoy the way they push for diversity as well retell classic tales with a modern day twist.

Live Arts Venue Of The Year: Theatre Royal

It is a place that will always have my heart ever since first visiting many years ago. Based in the heart of Newcastle city centre the Theatre Royal has become a focal point and central hub for those looking to discover productions and  performing arts shows.

Outstanding Contribution To Live Arts: Matthew Bourne & New Adventures

What I love about Matthew Bourne and his team at New Adventures is how they have this ability to take classic well known stories and add their alternative twist.

With each production, Matthew Bourne really raises the bar, and in doing so takes along the audience along for journey as we get to witness the inner creations of his artistic mind.

Film & TV:

Rising Star in Film & TV Award: Dan Li

Dan Li - Photo By David Reiss - Styling By Olga Timofejeva - Grooming By Maya Lewis

Earlier this year we had the pleasure of speaking to British-Chinese actor Dan Li as part of a special project in support of his role in the gripping drama Red Eye.

It became very apparent to me earlier on in our conversation that Dan is proud of his cultural heritage and was only too happy to be part of productions such as Red Eye which looked to change the narrative and promote the representation of asians playing leading roles on UK screens.

As a person Dan is a very genuine and positive spirit, and he brings that that  special authenticity to his career as an acting. Red Eye is just one of the many shows he been part of, and I know it is only a matter of time that Dan Li will become a much loved and sought after household name.

TV & Film PR Of The Year: Iain McCallum

From all the independent PRs I have the pleasure of collaborating with, Iain McCallum is a man like no other. Over the years Iain has sort DARKUS support on a number of projects involving his clients, and this year especially I was only too glad to offer my assistance.

The key to any good relationship is open communication and a shared vision and understanding, and this is something I really value and enjoy about my joint projects with Iain. Iain is a forward thinker and a man who gives each of his projects and the campaigns he is part of his full and complete attention, thus creating impactful results in the process.

Pioneer Of UK Film Industry: Ella Greenwood

It is madness to think that the first time Ella came onto my radar was as part of a email her agent at the time had sent me back in 2020 in the middle of lockdown. Having only turned 19 at the time, Ella had a thirst and hunger to create her own films, which led her to setting up Broken Flames Productions. Focusing on short films, Ella used these films as a way to champion the voices of young people as she explored issues such as mental health, life and relationships.

4 years later, Ella's work and vision behind Broken Flames continues to flourish, with her films gaining international recognition and showcased at film festivals across the globe. Ella has a powerfully inspirational level of ambition and drive, as she continues to create waves to become a prominent name in the film industry and leed the way for many other young actors and film directors to break into the industry.

North East Film Maker Of The Year: Dean Midas

Imagine having a passion and transforming it into a reality, Well that is exactly what happened in the case of Dean Midas. Dean who is from WIllington in County Durham has always has a thirst for horror films (pardon the pun) and is the creative mind behind the Dolly Vs Eve franchise which has gained a lot of attention especially within the local media.

This year especially has probably been one of his most challenging but also equally rewarding chapters of his life as a film maker, having created two new films, including Eve Valentine back in February as well as his recent film The Legend of Sayer Hicks (the sequel to his previous film The Devils Stone that he released in 2023). Proving that all you need is a bit of imagination, team work and an open mind, Dean is a Filmmaker in a league of his own.

Travel & Lifestyle:

Travel & Wellbeing Destination Of The Year: INNSiDE by Melia Newcastle

Since opening its doors to the public in 2021, INNSiDE by Melia Newcastle has been a place I have love returning to time and time again. At the heart of the Melia vision is this concept of offering guests not just a place to rest when visiting the region, but also going over and beyond to ensure they offer guests that little bit extra.

As my love for this location continues to strengthen, this year what really impressed me was the hotel’s initiatives to provide wellbeing packages as part of the guest experience. For instance this June, I was able to take part in the a woodland walk with guests and members of the INNSiDE By Melia team at Thorney Woods, just a short drive away from Newcastle. Not only this but the hotel has a continued commitment to  supporting local creatives and businesses, thus ensuring that guests are able to get a taste of some of the special things that our region has to offer.

As I always says the experiences we have, are all down to the people behind the scenes, and in the case of INNSiDE by Melia Newcastle, the staff led by Scott Brown and  Shireen Rowley have done an exceptional job in enuring that every single detail is taken care of. A tranquil space in the heart of hustle and bustle of city life which feels like a home away from home.

Travel & Lifestyle PR of The Year: We Are Indigo

The travel and dining sector is still a part of DARKUS which we are finding our way in, but it is thanks to teams such as We Are Indigo that we are able to explore new ventures. 2024 marked We Are Indigo’s 13 year anniversary, and it has been a year of constant mile stones and achievements.

I may have only known them for a few years, but what I really value about We Are Indigo is their dedication to the clients that they represent, with them now having an impressive portfolio of different clients across the UK as well as further afield as well. We Are Indigo are thriving and they are doing it in such style too, hence why it is such a no brainer to name them as my chosen Travel and Lifestyle PR of The Year.
