The final preview before her third studio album This Is How Tomorrow Moves, Beaches finds Beabadoobee at peace – emotionally, physically, and musically. Written in Rick Rubin’s Shangri-La studio, the single successfully encapsulates the tranquil nature of soaking in the Malibu waters, and follows a journey of self-exploration and acceptance.
Spending her time “eating healthily, soaking up the sun, going for dips in the ocean and constantly writing and recording”, the song is able to capture the sunny atmosphere without falling into the ‘summer song’ trope.
Lyrically, the single doubles down on the serene aesthetic, with the catchy chorus “I’m sure now, I’m sure”, a quiet, calm confidence simply oozes out of this indie rock banger. It can sometimes be difficult to avoid sounding arrogant when writing a self-love song, however Beabadoobee successfully navigates the pitfalls, and portrays a woman who is comfortable and secure in herself, both as a person and an artist.
Sonically however, Beabadoobee steps outside her comfort zone with this track, marking a transition from folk-inspired bedroom pop to a more refined, polished sound. The driving, distorted guitars provide a raw energy for the more gentle vocals to sit atop, and inject a feeling of refreshing nostalgia into the song.
This single overall is a demonstration from Beabadoobe, that as she continues to grow as a person, her art will also develop in unison. It is a step forward into new territory, without losing what made people fall in love with her music in the first place.
