A Chilling Night Out: Exploring the Dark Obsessions of Single White Female at Richmond Theatre

This week, we sat down for the stage adaptation of the iconic psychological thriller Single White Female at Richmond Theatre. There is always a certain level of trepidation when a beloved 90s cult classic is brought to the stage, how do you translate that cinematic sense into a live performance? Fortunately, the production manages to carve out its own identity, delivering a tense exploration of identity and isolation that feels remarkably relevant for today’s world.
A Fresh Spin on a Classic Plot
I absolutely loved the storyline. While I walked in expecting a beat-for-beat recreation of the film, I was pleasantly surprised to find a slightly different adaptation. The core remains the same, a woman seeking a roommate who inadvertently invites a predator into her home, but the stage script tweaks certain character motivations and plot points that make the descent into madness feel fresh. These changes kept me on the edge of my seat, as I couldn't simply rely on my memory of the movie to predict the next move.

Atmospheric Mismatches
Despite the strong narrative, there were a few elements that felt "off-key" throughout the evening:
The Soundtrack: I really didn't enjoy the music played in between scenes. It felt a bit random and occasionally disrupted the building pressure of the plot. Instead of a cohesive, atmospheric score, the transitions felt disjointed, making it difficult to maintain that "safety-is-gone" feeling the actors were working so hard to create.
The "Comedy": Perhaps the most confusing part of the night was the reaction from the crowd. The audience was laughing throughout, which was genuinely baffling. This play is a dark, gritty thriller, it is definitely not a comedy. Whether it was a nervous reaction to the tension or just a misunderstanding of the tone, the laughter felt entirely out of place for such a sinister story.
Final Thoughts
If you can ignore the odd musical choices and the strangely jovial atmosphere in the stalls, there is a very high-quality thriller at the heart of this production. The Richmond Theatre continues to host ambitious work, and seeing this "slightly twisted" version of Allie and Hedra’s battle was a highlight of my week.
